After US President Trump threatened to raise tariffs on European cars, European Commission President Frans Timmermans said on Tuesday that the EU is ready to deal with all possible scenarios.
AFP reported that on Friday (May 1st), Trump vowed to raise the tariffs on EU exports to the US from the original 15% to 25%, accusing the EU of violating the trade agreement reached last year. De Gucht denied the accusations.
De Gucht said to reporters in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia: "The agreement is the agreement. We reached an agreement... Both sides are fulfilling this agreement while respecting their respective democratic procedures."
The European Parliament has conditionally approved the EU-US trade agreement, but according to the EU's procedures, the final version still needs to be negotiated with the member states.
De Keyser said: "From the EU's perspective, we are currently in the final stage of implementing the remaining tariff commitments."
She said: "At the same time, the United States has also made commitments - for instance, there is still work to be done in aligning with the agreed-upon limits."
She emphasized: "Therefore, we hope to achieve mutual benefit, cooperation and reliability through this work, and we have made preparations for all possible scenarios."
The agreement reached between the US and Europe last year had already reduced the tariffs on European imported cars and components from 25% to 15%. However, on Friday, Trump repeatedly criticized the EU on social media and during his activities at the White House and in Florida, accusing them of not complying with the trade agreement they had reached. "So I decided to raise the tariffs. This will bring billions of dollars to the US and force them to move their factories here faster."
