Trump presents new options for handling Iran's uranium enrichment issue

US President Trump posted a message on social media, stating that either the enriched uranium held by Iran should be transported back to the US for destruction, or it should be destroyed under international supervision within Iran.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday (May 25th, US Eastern Time), which was in the morning of May 26th (Singapore time), Trump said that Iran's enriched uranium "must be handed over immediately to the United States" and transported back to the US for destruction; "Even better, with the joint efforts and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, it should be destroyed on-site or at an acceptable location elsewhere", and the entire process and related matters must be witnessed by the "Atomic Energy Commission" or equivalent institutions throughout the process.

It is not yet clear whether the "Atomic Energy Commission" mentioned by Trump refers to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

CNN believes that, compared with Trump's previous statements, this statement shows that he is "open-minded" about Iran's involvement in the process of handling enriched uranium.

Xinhua News Agency reported that Trump had previously threatened Iran to hand over its enriched uranium. On the 21st, at the White House, he told the media that Iran must hand over the highly enriched uranium it possesses. The United States is likely to destroy it after obtaining it.

The disposal of enriched uranium is one of the main points of contention in the US-Iran negotiations. Some US officials recently stated that without destroying the enriched uranium, there would be "no dollars", meaning the unfreezing of Iran's frozen assets. And according to a report by foreign media last week, Iran's Supreme Leader Muqtada al-Sadr has issued an order, demanding that the stockpile of enriched uranium not be transported abroad, stating that "Iranian senior officials believe that transporting nuclear materials abroad will make Iran more vulnerable to attacks by the United States and Israel in the future."
