The vote counting for the local elections in the UK has been completed. The ruling party, the Labour Party, suffered a severe defeat, losing a large number of seats in local councils. The opposition party, the Conservative Party, also suffered heavy losses. The far-right party, the UK Independence Party, performed strongly.
Xinhua News Agency reported that this local election was held on Thursday (May 7th), covering approximately 5,000 seats in 136 local councils across England, as well as all seats in the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Parliament.
The authorities completed the vote count on Saturday (the 9th). The results showed that the Labour Party won only around 1,000 seats in this local election, and lost control of several traditional voting areas, losing the absolute majority status in about 40 local councils. Additionally, the Conservative Party won approximately 800 seats.
In contrast, the Reform Party in the UK has seen a significant expansion of its influence, winning over 1,400 seats and achieving an absolute majority in more than 10 local councils, including several traditional strongholds of the Labour Party or the Conservative Party. The Liberal Democrats and the Green Party also performed well in this election, with the former securing over 800 seats and the latter obtaining nearly 600 seats.
In the Scottish Parliament election, the Scottish National Party won 58 out of 129 seats, remaining the largest party but not achieving an absolute majority. The UK Independence Party won 17 seats, tied with the Labour Party. The Conservative Party lost 19 seats and was left with only 12 seats.
In the Welsh parliamentary election, the Labour Party won only 9 out of the 96 seats, completely losing control of the Welsh Parliament. The Welsh Nationalist Party won 43 seats and became the largest party, but did not reach the majority. The UK Independence Party ranked second, winning 34 seats.
After the election, British Prime Minister Stammer posted a message on social media, saying that the election results were "severe" and that he would not sugarcoat this. The Labour Party should reflect on and respond to the messages conveyed by the voters in this election.
When interviewed by British media, he once again stated that he would not "just walk away and leave the country in chaos". The correct approach is "to rebuild and point out the way forward".
According to British media reports, more than 20 Labour Party members in the British House of Commons have publicly called for Stammer's resignation or the establishment of a timetable for his departure. However, several cabinet members such as the Chancellor of the Exchequer Reeves and the Defence Secretary Hill have publicly supported Stammer.
In England, this local election is regarded as an important test for the major political parties following the 2024 UK general election.
