US President Trump announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 US troops to Poland. Previously, he had suspended the plan to deploy an army to Poland due to dissatisfaction with NATO countries' refusal to offer assistance in the Iran war. This troop increase marks his reversal of that decision.
On Thursday (May 21st), Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, saying that given that his candidate Karol Nawrocki had successfully been elected as the president of Poland, "Considering our relationship and his, I am very pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 soldiers to Poland."
Bloomberg reported that just a week ago, the Pentagon announced that it would suspend the plan to send about 4,000 US Army soldiers to Poland. At that time, some US soldiers stationed at Fort Hood in Texas had already set off for Poland.
When asked about Trump's announcement on the 21st, the Pentagon passed the question on to the White House, which has not commented on it yet.
Trump had previously threatened to withdraw at least 5,000 US soldiers from Germany and hinted at planning to withdraw a much larger number of 85,000 US military personnel from Europe. Previously, he engaged in a verbal battle with German Chancellor Merkel. Merkel said last month that the US had been "humiliated" by the Iranian negotiators.
The nationalist Nafrotski, supported by the Law and Justice Party in 2025, won the Polish presidential election as an independent candidate and took office in August of the same year. It is believed by the outside world that he has close ties with the US Republican Party, especially the Trump camp.
