The Trump administration plans to cancel a $1.8 billion legal fund

Insiders have disclosed that the Trump administration of the United States plans to cancel a nearly $1.8 billion (approximately $2.3 billion Singapore dollars) "anti-weaponization fund". This fund was originally intended to compensate those who claimed to have been "weaponized" by government law enforcement, but it was criticized by both the Republican and Democratic parties as a "pocket money fund" set up for Trump's political allies.

This fund originated from the settlement agreement reached between Trump and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding the 2019 tax information leak incident. Previously, Trump had filed a lawsuit against the IRS, claiming that its tax information was leaked to The New York Times.

The US Department of Justice said last month that as part of the establishment of the "Anti-Warfare Fund", Trump would withdraw the lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. The Department of Justice previously stated that the fund would compensate those affected by politically motivated investigations or legal actions, namely the so-called victims of the government's "weaponization" and suppression by Trump and his allies.

Bloomberg, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, did not disclose any further details, including those related to whether this decision would affect the settlement agreement between Trump and the IRS.

However, this arrangement has sparked intense controversy. Critics have pointed out that the fund might benefit Trump's allies, even including some of those involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Several Republican senators have also opposed the allocation of funds for this purpose and have threatened to obstruct immigration enforcement-related bills.

John Thune, the majority leader of the US Senate, said that if the government voluntarily cancels the fund, "that would be the ideal outcome".

This fund is currently facing several lawsuits, including those filed by police officers who were involved in responding to the congressional riots.

A federal judge in Virginia temporarily halted the government's efforts to operate the fund last week; the Department of Justice responded by saying that although it "strongly opposed" the decision, it would abide by the court's ruling.

One of the organizations that filed the lawsuit against the fund, "Democracy Forward", its chairperson Periman, issued a statement saying that even if the government terminates the plan, they will not immediately withdraw the lawsuit until they confirm that the relevant arrangements will not be resumed.
