According to reports from Greenland, the special envoy of US President Trump to Greenland arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Sunday (May 17th) for a visit that will last for several days.
Last December, Trump appointed Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, as the special envoy to Greenland. This was the first visit to Greenland for Landry after he received the appointment. He will attend an economic forum to be held in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on the 19th and 20th.
The "Future Greenland" forum, organized by the local employer organization, the Greenland Chamber of Commerce (Gronlands Erhverv), will bring together investors and business and political leaders. The forum aims to attract investment to Greenland.
The Sermitsiaq newspaper of Greenland reported that Landry arrived with about 10 people and left in five cars.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO member state. The US ambassador to Denmark is scheduled to arrive in Greenland on Monday.
The consulate in Nuuk, which is affiliated with the US Embassy in Denmark, issued a statement to Agence France-Presse saying: "The US delegation will meet with a wide range of Greenlanders, listen and learn, with the aim of expanding economic opportunities, establishing civil ties, and enhancing understanding between the United States and Greenland."
In January this year, Trump withdrew his repeated threats to "take over" Greenland. Subsequently, Denmark and Greenland held their first meeting in Washington.
Trump has repeatedly argued that for national security reasons, the United States needs to control Greenland. He claims that if the United States does not occupy Greenland, this Arctic island will fall into the hands of China or Russia.
On May 12th, the Prime Minister of the Greenlandic Autonomous Government, Nielsen, said that although negotiations between Greenland, Denmark and the United States have made some progress, no agreement has been reached yet.
