British Prime Minister Straw admitted to the parliamentarians that he should not have appointed the veteran of the Labour Party, Mandelson, as the ambassador to Washington.
AFP reported that Stammer said during a speech in parliament on Monday (April 20th) regarding this escalating political scandal: "The core of this matter lies in the fact that I made a wrong judgment. I should not have appointed Mandelson... I am fully responsible for this decision and once again apologize to the victims of Epstein. My decision clearly let them down."
Since Bloomberg disclosed last September that Mandelson had a close relationship with the late American sex offender Epstein, the Mandelson scandal has repeatedly surfaced, putting political pressure on Prime Minister Stammer. Stammer later dismissed Mandelson, but as the US Department of Justice released millions of documents related to Epstein in early January this year, more details came to light.
Stammer told the parliament that he only learned last Tuesday that the Foreign Office had approved Mandelson's appointment despite the clear advice of the UK security review agency responsible for conducting the due diligence. He also said that the highest-ranking British civil servant, Woolmerd, who was then the Cabinet Secretary, was not informed that Mandelson had failed the review.
Stammer said that he had asked the agency responsible for setting safety standards for government departments to review any potential safety hazards that emerged during Mandelson's tenure as the British ambassador to the United States.
"I can inform the parliament that I have expanded the scope of the security review authority to ensure that it covers all decision-making methods related to national security reviews."
