The EU plans to invest quickly in Greenland to enhance Arctic defense equipment

European Commission President Frans Timmerman said that the European Commission will soon propose a substantive investment plan for the semi-autonomous territory of Greenland in Denmark. US President Trump said that the new agreement being negotiated for Greenland will be "more generous" to the United States.

Reuters reported that Frédérique de Leyen said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday (January 23rd): "We are working hard to strengthen our relationship with Greenland. As part of this, the committee will soon present a package of substantive investment plans."

In addition, the EU will also use the surge in defense spending to acquire equipment suitable for the Arctic region, such as purchasing an European icebreaker.

De Ruyter said: "We should strengthen security and defense arrangements with regional partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway and Iceland. This is a genuine geopolitical necessity for Greenland."

On the other hand, Trump said that he had reached an agreement with NATO, under which the United States would obtain full and permanent ownership of Greenland.

On Thursday (the 22nd), as Trump was flying back to the US from Davos in Switzerland, he told reporters on Air Force One that a new agreement regarding Greenland would be "more generous to the United States".

However, Trump avoided answering the question regarding the sovereignty of Greenland. He merely said, "We must be able to act completely according to our own will."

Earlier, Trump told Fox Business Channel that this agreement actually grants the United States "full use rights" over Greenland, "and it will not terminate and has no expiration date."

On Wednesday (the 21st), after meeting with NATO Secretary General Ruttner in Davos, Trump announced that the US has established a framework with NATO, which enables the two sides to reach a permanent agreement that is beneficial to all parties regarding the security and resources of Greenland and the entire Arctic in the future. As a result, he also cancelled the plan to impose tariffs on eight European countries.

Trump said that Vice President Pence, Secretary Rubio and Presidential Special Envoy Witkowski would be in charge of the relevant negotiations.
