The death toll from floods in the northern mountainous areas of Vietnam has risen to 10.

AFP reported that Vietnam's disaster management department said on Sunday (August 3) that recent heavy rain has caused floods in Son La Province, Phu Tho Province, Tuyen Quang Province and Dien Bien Province, resulting in many deaths.

The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that a total of 10 people died and 7 were injured in Ti Dinh Commune and Sa Yong Commune of Dien Bien Province.

Official media, citing local government reports, said that heavy rainfall from Thursday to Saturday (July 31 to August 2) triggered flash floods.

Local governments dispatched helicopters to remote communities to deliver basic necessities of life. Residents have been evacuated to safe areas and power and telecommunications services have largely returned to normal by Sunday evening.

Vietnam is currently in the tropical storm season, where tropical storms often cause fatal floods and landslides.

In late July, a similar flash flood broke out in Son La Province, killing five people, flooding crops and washing away poultry and livestock.
