On Tuesday (June 9th), the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Norway announced new coordinated sanctions. These sanctions are aimed at Israeli networks that are involved in providing funds, condoning and carrying out violent activities in the occupied West Bank of Jordan.
Reuters reported that the measures taken by these four countries were coordinated with the sanctions announced by Australia and New Zealand last week, highlighting the dissatisfaction of many Western countries with the expansion of Jewish settlements by the Netanyahu government in Israel.
The foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Norway and Australia issued a joint statement saying that these measures are aimed at "holding accountable the extreme settlers for the heinous violent crimes they have committed against Palestinian civilians".
The statement also said: "We continue to urge the Israeli government to take action and hold those responsible for the violence in the West Bank accountable."
The violent incidents involving settlers in the West Bank have recently seen a significant escalation. Diplomatic officials have stated that these violent actions are aimed at undermining the prospects of a Palestinian state.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the sanctions, accusing the implementing government of failing to curb anti-Semitism but instead fueling it through such sanctions.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying: "The true essence of these measures is an attempt to impose a political stance regarding the right of Jews to settle on Israeli land and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Israel itself, and to disguise it as measures to combat violence."
The chairman of the "Yesha Council", a municipal organization representing Jewish settlements in the West Bank of Jordan, Gantz, said that the Israeli parliament should dissolve the Palestinian authority and strengthen Israel's presence and sovereignty throughout the West Bank.
