According to a report by Reuters, an alert issued by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, indicated that on Thursday (March 12th) morning, a gunman opened fire inside a building on the campus, injuring two people. The police and emergency rescue teams responded immediately and the gunman was subdued shortly after the shooting.
The FBI stated that the gunman was subdued by a group of ROTC cadets and subsequently died. FBI agent Evans said at a press conference that the gunman was not killed by gunfire. According to CNN, the gunman entered a classroom, asked if it was an ROTC course, and then opened fire.
FBI Director Patel previously posted on social media that the FBI, in collaboration with the counter-terrorism task force, has fully engaged and is working closely with local authorities, providing all necessary resources.
FBI investigators stated that the gunman was sentenced to prison after admitting to the federal charge of providing material support to terrorists in 2016, and was released in 2024.
According to some reports from the US media, the police have identified the shooter as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, who was a member of the Virginia National Guard. In 2016, he was convicted for attempting to provide support to the terrorist organization "Islamic State".
The alert stated that there is currently no threat on the campus, but the incident site and its surrounding areas remain restricted zones. Rescue workers are still working at the scene. The main campus of Alderdomin University has been closed for one day.
