NATO launches "Arctic Sentinel" plan to unify command of existing military tasks

(Brussels, General News) NATO has announced a new "Arctic Sentinel" mission to placate US President Trump, who previously withdrew from the acquisition of Greenland. The new mission will coordinate all existing military operations of NATO allies in the Arctic region, but it is unclear whether more military forces will be deployed.

On Wednesday (February 11th), NATO announced the "Arctic Sentry" plan. In the initial stage, the "multi-domain activities" already carried out by each member will be centralized under the command of NATO's Joint Operations Command in Norfolk, Virginia. This includes the upcoming joint exercises by Norway and Denmark, as well as the "Arctic Endurance Operation" exercise conducted by Denmark on the Greenland Island.

The Danish Ministry of Defence stated that it would make a "significant" contribution to this mission, but emphasized that it is still too early to determine the specific actions. Germany disclosed that it will send four Typhoon fighter jets to participate in the first stage of the mission. The British Ministry of Defence also said that it will play an important role in the "Arctic Sentinel" mission.

NATO Secretary-General Ruttner said that in addition to taking over the overall command of all military operations for the first time, NATO will also identify the weak points that need to be strengthened through the "Arctic Sentinel" program.

However, it is unclear whether the new mission means that NATO will expand its military presence in the Arctic.
