The temperature in southeastern Turkey reached a record high of 50.5 degrees Celsius.
AFP reported that the Turkish Ministry of Environment said in a statement on social media on Saturday (July 26) that the record high temperature was recorded in Silopi on Friday (July 25). The previous record for the highest temperature was 49.5 degrees Celsius recorded in August 2023.
The statement also said that a total of 132 meteorological stations across the country recorded record-breaking temperatures until July.
Silopi is located in Shelnak Province, just 10 kilometers from the borders of Turkey with Iraq and Syria.
At present, Turkey is being hit by a heatwave, with fires breaking out in many areas due to the hot weather. Local firefighters have been fighting a fire in the northern Karabook Province for four days, forcing several villagers to evacuate.
On Wednesday, a fire in Esquishere Province claimed 10 lives.
Authorities expect this heatwave to last for several days. Some local governments have announced water restrictions, including the seaside resort of Cheshme near Izmir on the west coast of Turkey.
