Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Iranian President Mohammad Peshizyyan to discuss cooperation between Russia and Iran in areas such as energy and transportation infrastructure.

Xinhua News Agency quoted the website of the Russian president as saying that Putin and Pezeshzyyan had a phone call on Tuesday (December 30), and the two sides exchanged views on further strengthening cooperation between Russia and Iran in areas such as energy and transportation infrastructure, and discussed issues related to Iran's nuclear program.

Reuters also reported that the Kremlin urged all parties on Tuesday to avoid escalating the situation over the Iran issue. Previously, US President Trump hinted that if Iran restarts its ballistic missile or nuclear weapons program, the United States might support another large-scale strike against Iran.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov said that Russia will continue to maintain close relations with Iran. It is necessary to avoid taking any actions that may exacerbate regional tensions. We believe that, first and foremost, dialogue with Iran must be held.

In June this year, after the US military joined Israel's 12-day military operation against Tehran, it attacked Iran's three major nuclear facilities. Trump claimed at the time that these attacks "destroyed" Iran's nuclear facilities, but a later assessment by the United States found that the attacks mainly only damaged one of the facilities - the Fordow nuclear facility.

Russia and Iran signed a strategic partnership treaty this year. The West accused Tehran of providing missiles and drones to Russia for attacks on Ukraine, but Iran denied the accusation.
