Germany: Trump's Threat to Greenland Has Crossed the EU's Red Line

German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble stated that President Trump's threat to annex Greenland has crossed the red line for the EU and called for the EU to consider taking measures to counter economic coercion.

Bloomberg reported that Kleinbauer said on Monday (January 19th): "We keep encountering new provocations and facing new hostility. This is what President Trump is seeking. We Europeans must make it clear that this has crossed the line."

Klinbauer added: "Europe has a well-established toolkit based on law, which can be used to respond to economic blackmail through very sensitive measures. We should now explore the use of these measures."

On Saturday (the 17th), Trump announced that starting from February 1st, tariffs of 10% would be imposed on goods from eight European countries, and from June, the rate would be raised to 25%, unless an agreement is reached between the parties regarding the purchase of Greenland by the United States.

Insiders say that if Trump persists in implementing the relevant tariff measures, the EU might impose tariffs on 93 billion euros' worth of US goods. The EU has already begun discussions on this matter.

Klinbauer said: "The boundaries have been crossed... During the negotiations, I noticed that people expected us not to give in to blackmail and to take action to counter it."

For me, at all times, it is essential to be fully aware that Europe must be ready to take action. It cannot wait until the last minute to prepare. Such preparations must be initiated right now.
