US President Trump threatened that the new Iranian leader not approved by him "would not last long". After Trump made this warning, Iran announced that the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, Mojtaba, had become the new Supreme Leader.

On Sunday (March 8th), Trump said in an interview with ABC that the new leader appointed by Iran "must receive our approval", otherwise "he won't hold onto power for long".

Trump also said that it could be considered to accept someone associated with the "old regime" of Iran to serve as the new leader of Iran. "Many of these people may be qualified for the job."

However, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi emphasized in an interview with NBC earlier that day that this was Iran's own decision and "no one is allowed to interfere in our internal affairs."

The semi-official Fars News Agency of Iran reported on the 8th that an expert meeting in Iran voted overwhelmingly to elect Mojtaba Khamenei as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The 56-year-old Mousavi is regarded as a conservative figure and has close ties with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. After the Iranian experts' meeting announced Mousavi's election as the new supreme leader, the Revolutionary Guard issued a statement, pledging total allegiance to this new supreme leader.
