German Foreign Minister Waldorf emphasized the importance of transatlantic relations before his visit to Washington on Sunday (January 11th). The current relationship between the United States and its European Allies is becoming tense due to US President Trump's interest in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and the military operation taken in Venezuela, a South American country.
Wadford said in Berlin on Sunday that when he meets with US Secretary of State Rubio on Monday (the 12th), they will discuss the "differences of opinion" between Germany and the United States. He said, "If there are differences of opinion, we hope to resolve them through dialogue to fulfill our shared responsibility for peace and security."
He emphasized: "To continue shaping the world order, investing in the transatlantic partnership has never been more crucial than it is now."
Wadford will also meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on this trip. He said, "For Germany, being a reliable international partner clearly includes a commitment to international law and international cooperation."
On his way to the United States on Sunday, Wadfur will also stop in Iceland to hold talks with the Icelandic Foreign Minister on security in the Arctic region.
