U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Senator Markwayne Mullin will assume the post of Homeland Security starting March 31, replacing current Secretary Noem.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Trump announced on social media Thursday (March 5) that a new "Western Hemisphere Security Initiative," known as "Shield of the Americas," is scheduled to be announced on Saturday (March 7) in Florida, and Noem will become its special envoy.
Noem is the first cabinet member to be dismissed since the start of Trump's second term.
Mulin is a Republican senator from Oklahoma. Trump referred to him on social media that day as "the only Native American in the Senate."
Earlier on Thursday, U.S. media reported that Trump was dissatisfied with Noem's performance this week before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees and was considering dismissing her.
The report states that after law enforcement officers from a Department of Homeland Security unit killed two U.S. citizens in an operation in Minnesota, Noem gave contradictory accounts, drawing strong criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. Democrats are demanding Noem's resignation and have threatened impeachment proceedings against her.
