Britain and France jointly launched air strikes against the facilities of the "Islamic State" (ISIS) in Syria to prevent the extremist group from making a comeback.
AFP reported that the UK and France cooperated on Saturday evening (January 3) to launch an air strike on an underground facility in Syria suspected of being used by the Islamic State group to store weapons.
France said on Sunday (the 4th) that this Operation was part of "Operation Inherent Resolve". This is an international military operation led by the United States, aimed at combating the "Islamic State" organization in Iraq, Syria and Libya.
The UK Ministry of Defence also issued a statement saying: "The Royal Air Force's aircraft, in collaboration with France, successfully struck 'Daesh' (another name for the Islamic State Group)."
The statement also said: "This underground facility was once occupied by the 'Islamic State' and was very likely used to store weapons and explosives." There are no civilians living in the area around the facility."
The British Ministry of Defence said there were no signs that the air strike north of the ancient city of Palmyra posed any risk to civilians.
The French armed forces issued a statement on social media saying that as part of the "Firm Resolve Operation", the two NATO Allies "carried out strikes on the strongholds of the terrorist organization Islamic State". Preventing the resurgence of Daesh is a key issue for the security of the region.
The Islamic State was completely defeated in Syria in 2019, but it still maintains a certain presence, especially in the vast desert areas of the country.
Preventing the organization from making a comeback is an important priority for the international community. More than a year after overthrowing former President Assad, Syrian President Shara is striving to consolidate Syria's security.
Last month, Washington said that an Islamic State gunman attacked US military personnel in Palmyra, killing two US soldiers and one US civilian. The United States later launched attacks on dozens of "Islamic State" targets in Syria as a form of retaliation.
