(London, general news) The case of the deceased American sex offender Epstein continues to gain momentum. The former British ambassador to the United States, Mandelson, received a compensation package when he was dismissed, which has sparked controversy. Meanwhile, Maxwini, the chief of staff to Prime Minister Stammer, resigned after participating in the appointment of Mandelson.
Bloomberg reported that the compensation received by the powerful figure of the ruling Labour Party, Mandelson, was equivalent to three months' salary, which could amount to as much as 55,000 pounds.
People from all walks of life are calling on the government to demand compensation from the scandal-stricken Mandelson. The Labour Party's British Minister for Employment and Retirement Security, Macfarlane, said during an interview that Mandelson should return the money or donate it to charity organizations. He said, "To receive compensation in such circumstances, I'm sure the public would not approve of it."
Last February, British Prime Minister Stammer appointed 72-year-old Mandelson as the ambassador to the United States. However, he was dismissed just seven months into his tenure due to the revelation of his connection with the Epstein case.
On Tuesday (February 3rd), the British police initiated a criminal investigation into Mandelson, who is suspected of engaging in improper behavior such as disclosing market-sensitive information to Epstein while in public office. The police stated that they are conducting searches of two of Mandelson's residences in central London.
The British Foreign Office said in a statement that, in light of the additional information that has been disclosed and the ongoing police investigation, an examination has been initiated into Mandelson's severance package.
Stammer is facing the risk of being ousted from his position due to poor management. Not only is he being attacked by the opposition parties, but the dissatisfaction within his own Labour Party is also growing increasingly intense. Rumors are even spreading that there are calls for a "coup against Stammer".
In the interview, McFadden attempted to defend Stammer, saying that Stammer had already apologized for the mistake and believed that he would learn from it. "We should continue to support the Prime Minister," he added.
According to Sky News and The Guardian on Sunday (8th), Stammer's chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, has resigned.
Stammer's position is precarious.
Maxwini was Stammer's closest advisor and was regarded as one of the key behind-the-scenes forces behind Stammer's success in the UK general election in July 2024. In a statement, he said that he had been closely involved in the appointment of Mandelson.
He said: "The decision to appoint Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and people's trust in politics itself. I am fully responsible for my suggestion that the prime minister make this appointment."
Stammer paid tribute to Maxwelline in a statement. He said, "It was due to his dedication, loyalty and leadership that we won an overwhelming majority in the 2024 election. Both the Labour Party and I are extremely grateful to him. I am grateful for everything he has done."
Stammer once described Maxwelline as an indispensable part of his team. The Labour Party members said they believed that Stammer could hold out until the local elections in May, but after that his political career would become extremely precarious. "In any case, both he and Maxwelline have now suffered very serious damage."
The political risk consultancy Eurasia Group has raised the likelihood of Stammer's dismissal this year from 65% to 80%, and claims that this has caused "irreparable damage".
