The situation along the Thai-Cambodia border is tense, and about 100,000 Cambodian citizens have left Thailand to return home

After the outbreak of a new round of border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, a large number of Cambodians began to evacuate from Thailand, and about 100,000 Cambodian citizens working in Thailand returned home urgently.

The Khmer Times reported that Song Lu, the governor of Battambang Province in northwestern Cambodia, said on Sunday (July 27) that about 100,000 Cambodian citizens working in Thailand were expected to return to Cambodia via the Daung International Border Gate in Battambang Province on that day.

Song Lu said that since the previous night, tens of thousands of Cambodian citizens have been gathering on the Thai side of the East International Port one after another, waiting to return home. After the opening of customs clearance on Sunday morning, a large number of people crossed the border one after another and set off on their way home. By 11:40 a.m., about 30% of the people had successfully cleared customs and entered the country.

After a deadly conflict broke out between the Thai and Cambodian armies in the border sovereignty dispute area on May 28, Cambodia had completely closed the East International Border Crossing in Battambang Province. The border conflict broke out again between the militaries of the two countries this week, further escalating tensions in relations between Thailand and Cambodia.

Song Lu said that in response to this large-scale wave of people returning home, the Battambang provincial government has dispatched a large number of vehicles to the scene to pick up and assist people in traveling to their respective provinces or destinations.

Cambodian Prime Minister Khon Manet said on Sunday that the government has coordinated with relevant ministries, the armed forces and seven border provinces to open ports, provide shelters and send vehicles to send people back home. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Committee and various agencies are responsible for the accommodation, medical care and safety of the evacuees.

Honmanet said that the Cambodian soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict would be buried with national honor.
