The United States has labeled Iran as a "country that supports illegal detention", marking the first such action taken by the US based on a new blacklist.
AFP reported that US Secretary of State Rubio made a statement on Friday (February 27th) saying: "The Iranian regime must stop kidnapping hostages and release all American citizens who have been unjustly detained by Iran."
Rubio said that this decision does not come with any penalties, but if Iran does not stop the relevant actions, he might announce a ban on using American passports to travel to Iran.
Rubio also once again called on the former American citizens in Iran to leave immediately, saying: "No American citizen should go to Iran for any reason."
The United States only prohibits its own citizens from traveling to one country, that is, North Korea. Many Iranian Americans frequently visit Iran. Since the overthrow of the pro-American Iranian Pahlavi dynasty in 1979, Iran has been ruled by religious officials to this day.
Last September, US President Trump signed an executive order to create a blacklist of illegal detentions, similar to the way the US classifies terrorism.
