The Russian state-owned enterprise Rosatom has received messages from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international partners indicating that the United States is willing to cooperate with Russia on the issue of external power transmission from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Xinhua News Agency reported that on Thursday (December 25), the CEO of Russia's state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, Likhachev, said that Rosatom did not directly participate in the negotiations with the United States but received information through indirect channels such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and foreign partners. He said that they were ready to carry out international cooperation on issues such as the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant supplying power to large energy users.
Likhachev said that some of the electricity from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant might be transmitted to Ukraine in the future, but the specific transmission volume needs to be determined through consultation. He also said that only the Russian operating agency could be responsible for the safety and operation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
According to Ukrainian media reports on Wednesday (24th), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced 20 points of the latest draft of the Russia-Ukraine "Peace Plan" at a press briefing, among which it was mentioned that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant will be jointly operated by Ukraine, the United States and Russia.
However, Zelensky said that Ukraine and the United States failed to reach an agreement on how to manage and operate the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe. After the Ukraine crisis escalated comprehensively in February 2022, Russia took control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been repeatedly shelled or attacked by drones, raising concerns in the international community about the safety of nuclear power plants.
