European leaders unanimously stated on Tuesday (January 6th) that only Greenland and Denmark have the right to determine their own future.
After US President Trump seized Venezuelan President Maduro and announced the takeover of Venezuela, he once again proposed that Greenland should become part of the United States, which has raised concerns among Denmark and its Western allies.
In response to this, French President Macron, German Chancellor Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Tusk, Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez, British Prime Minister Stamer and Danish Prime Minister Frærikson issued a joint statement on Tuesday, emphasizing: "Greenland belongs to its people. Matters related to Denmark and Greenland can only be decided by Denmark and Greenland."
The statement indicates that maintaining Arctic security remains a crucial priority for Europe, and it is also of great significance for international and transatlantic security. "We and many other allies have increased our presence, activities and investments in the Arctic to ensure the security of this region and to deter potential adversaries."
The statement said that the Kingdom of Denmark, which encompasses Greenland, is a part of NATO, and the security of the Arctic region must be achieved through joint efforts with NATO allies, including the United States.
Several leaders stated that they will continue to firmly uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and is located in the northeastern part of North America. It is the largest island in the world. Currently, the United States has a military base on Greenland. Besides its strategic location in the Arctic, Greenland also contains abundant key minerals needed in the high-tech sector.
On Sunday (the 4th), Trump gave a phone interview to The Atlantic Monthly. He said that Venezuela might not be the last country for which the US would intervene, and emphasized that the US needed Greenland. He said, "We absolutely need Greenland. For defense purposes, we need it."
Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen promptly refuted Trump's claims as absurd and demanded that the US stop threatening the people of Denmark and Greenland, who are traditional allies of the US.
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Nielsen, said on Monday (the 5th) that his government is seeking to strengthen relations with the United States and pointed out that the people of Greenland need not worry that the United States will immediately take over this territory.
