Trump threatens to prevent the opening of the new bridge between the US and Canada

US President Trump threatened to prevent the opening of a new bridge connecting Michigan in the US and Ontario in Canada.

AFP reported that on Monday (February 9th), Trump said on social media that the US would immediately start negotiations with Canada on whether to allow the Gordie Howe International Bridge to be open to traffic.

He claimed that the United States should own at least half of the property rights of the Goddy Howe International Bridge.

This bridge, which cost 4.7 billion US dollars and was named after the late Canadian National Hockey League legend Gordie Howe, began construction in 2018 and is expected to be open to traffic later this year.

Trump posted on Truth Social: "I will not allow this bridge to open until Canada fully compensates us for everything they have given us. Moreover, more importantly, Canada must give the United States the fair and respectful treatment it deserves."

Trump said: "We will negotiate immediately. Right now."

Trump complained that Canada owned the entire ownership of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and that "almost" no American products were used during its construction.

"Now, even worse, (Canadian) Prime Minister Carney wants to reach an agreement with China - Canada will be swallowed up by them. We can only get some scraps! They won't get their way."

Carney visited Beijing last month and reached a preliminary trade agreement with China. Immediately after that, Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canada.
