Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been accused of killing a suspected drug offender during his tenure as mayor and president, and is facing three charges of murder from the International Criminal Court.
Bloomberg reported that on Monday (September 22), prosecutors of the International Criminal Court publicly released the indictment submitted by the prosecution on July 4, stating: "Duterte and his accomplices have a common plan or agreement to 'eliminate' suspected criminals (including those suspected of drug crimes) in the Philippines through violent criminal means including murder."
The prosecution also accused Duterte of ordering and assisting in the implementation of these criminal acts as an indirect accomplice. Duterte was previously accused of committing crimes against humanity and is currently detained at the International Criminal Court's detention center in The Hague, the Netherlands.
The International Criminal Court was originally scheduled to hold a trial earlier this month to confirm the charges against Duterte, but it was postponed due to an assessment of his health condition until it was determined that he was eligible to stand trial.
