The European Parliament approved the implementation of the tariff agreement reached with the United States on Tuesday (June 16th).

Xinhua News Agency reported that previously, the member states of the European Union had approved this agreement. After the European Parliament voted in favor of it, the main political procedures prior to the agreement's coming into effect had been completed.

If all goes well, the EU is expected to complete the relevant procedures by the July 4 deadline set by US President Trump, thereby defusing the threat of additional tariffs imposed by the US. Subsequently, the Council of the European Union will officially approve the negotiated text, and the agreement will come into effect after being published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The European Parliament has included a series of safeguard clauses in the text, including setting the validity period of the agreement until the end of 2029, unless it is renewed at that time. Additionally, if the United States fails to fulfill its commitments or disrupts trade and investment activities, the EU can suspend the agreement.

In July 2025, Europe and the United States reached a trade agreement. The core content of the agreement includes the EU suspending tariffs on all American industrial products and establishing a tariff quota system for a large number of American agricultural and food products entering the EU market, in exchange for the United States imposing a 15% tariff on most EU goods exported to the United States.

Due to the United States' demand for the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland causing tensions between the United States and Europe, and the fact that the US Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration's large-scale tariff policy was illegal, the EU's approval of the trade agreement between the two sides has been delayed for several months. Previously, Trump threatened that if the EU failed to fulfill the agreement by July 4th, he would significantly increase the tariffs on EU products exported to the US.
