The Vietnamese government reported that the heavy rainfall in the past few days has caused severe floods in the central region, especially hitting the popular tourist destinations of Hue and Hoi An.
Reuters reported that Vietnam's government disaster management agency said on Tuesday (October 28) that in the 24 hours up to late Monday (27th), the cumulative rainfall in many areas of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former imperial city of Hue and the ancient town of Hoi An exceeded 1,000 millimeters. Official photos show that a large area of Hoi An was flooded, with water reaching the rooftops of many houses. The authorities have dispatched boats to evacuate tourists.
The disaster management agency of the Vietnamese government reported that in Hue City, 32 out of 40 communities were hit by floods one to two meters deep, with water levels reaching a record high. Throughout central Vietnam, the authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of residents from the flooded areas, and local transportation and power supply have been cut off. More than 306,000 households and businesses in Hue, Danang and Quang Tri provinces suffered power outages.
The government's meteorological forecasting agency said on Tuesday that the water levels of major rivers in the central region are at their peak and floods will continue in the coming days, accompanied by the risk of new landslides.
Vietnam is often hit by deadly storms and floods during the typhoon season from June to October each year, causing extensive property damage. Government statistics show that in the first nine months of this year, natural disasters have caused 187 deaths and property losses of 16.1 trillion Vietnamese dong in Vietnam.
