(Washington / Beirut News) After negotiations, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire, on the condition that the Hezbollah in Lebanon completely stops its attacks and withdraws its armed personnel from the Lebanese southern region south of the Litani River. However, there are no signs of the fighting in the Lebanese south coming to an end.
According to a joint statement issued by Israel, Lebanon and the mediator country the United States on Wednesday (June 3rd), Israel and Lebanon have agreed to establish "pilot zones", where the Lebanese armed forces will exercise exclusive control over these areas, excluding all non-state actors. Although the statement did not name it explicitly, it is clearly referring to the Lebanese Hezbollah.
Lebanese President Emile Ouen said on Thursday (the 4th) that once the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire agreement is approved by all relevant parties, it will come into effect within 24 hours.
With the mediation of the United States, Israeli and Lebanese officials held the fourth round of direct negotiations in Washington on Wednesday. The two sides will further negotiate during the week of June 22 to build mutual trust and resolve other outstanding issues, aiming to reach a final comprehensive agreement.
However, Israeli Defense Minister Katz said on Thursday that although Israel and Lebanon have announced a new ceasefire agreement, the Israeli army will continue its military operations in Lebanon and will not withdraw. He also stated that with the support of the United States, the Israeli army can launch a counterattack in Beirut if Israel is attacked.
In his statement, Katz indicated that the Israeli army would continue to be stationed in large areas of southern Lebanon. The Israeli government refers to these areas as "buffer zones", whose function is to protect the residents in northern Israel from attacks by Hezbollah.
The far-right in Israel has strongly condemned the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon. The head of the security ministry of the far-right party, Ben-Gvir, directly called the ceasefire agreement a "grave mistake" and criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu for succumbing to pressure from the United States.
Ben-Gvir said that Israel is a sovereign and independent country. Even in the face of US President Trump, it must be able to say "no"; otherwise, it will face a more powerful and more dangerous Hezbollah.
The leader of Hezbollah, Kassem, also made a statement, demanding that Israel withdraw its troops from Lebanon and achieve a complete ceasefire. He warned that as long as Lebanese villages continue to be bombed, the northern part of Israel will not be safe.
In fact, the fighting in southern Lebanon is still ongoing. On the day when Israel and Lebanon reached a ceasefire, Hezbollah attacked Israeli soldiers in the northern part of the country; on the same day, the Israeli military said that they had intercepted an enemy aircraft and two artillery shells fired from Lebanon.
The Israeli army also attacked more than 20 targets in the southern Lebanon region on that day, resulting in at least nine deaths. Lebanese media reported that the Israeli army carried out a series of artillery attacks, drone strikes and air strikes in the southern Lebanon area on Thursday morning and afternoon.
Data released by the Lebanese Ministry of Health on Wednesday showed that since the resumption of fighting between Israel and Lebanon on March 2nd, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in 3,516 deaths and 10,674 injuries.
On Wednesday night, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was attacked by mortar shells near the Marjayoun area in southern Lebanon. One peacekeeping soldier was seriously injured and died, while two others were injured and taken to the hospital.
The UNIFIL forces issued a statement the next day, saying that they had recently detected a significant increase in the number of shells falling into southern Lebanon.
Earlier on the day when Israel and Lebanon reached a ceasefire agreement, US President Trump said that he hoped to handle the Israel-Lebanon conflict separately from the US-Iran negotiations. However, Iran insisted that these conflicts were interrelated, and the US-Iran ceasefire talks must cover the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Any peace agreement must include Lebanon.
Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Larijani warned on the same day that any attack on Beirut would lead to the resumption of full-scale war. He stated that if Israel attacked Beirut, the Iranian military would surely respond. He reiterated that only when the Israeli troops withdraw from Lebanon would the war come to an end.
