Indonesian President Prabowo said on Sunday (August 31) that political parties have agreed to revoke a number of benefits and privileges for lawmakers, which is a major concession to the demonstrations.

Reuters reported that Prabowo delivered a speech at a press conference held at the presidential palace in Jakarta, and leaders of various political parties attended the conference.

He said, "Parliamentary leaders have made it clear that they will revoke a series of policies, including parliamentary allowances and the suspension of overseas business trips."

He added, "I have ordered the police and the military to take as resolute action as possible in accordance with the law against acts of vandalism of public facilities, looting of personal residences and economic centers."

Jakarta residents gathered outside the Indonesian People's Congress (the lower house) on Monday (25th), demanding a dialogue with parliamentarians to express their opposition to the 50 million Indonesian rupiah (about 3,911 Singapore dollars) monthly housing allowance that parliamentarians receive, which is equivalent to ten times the monthly income of the city's minimum wage earners.

Demonstrations spread from Jakarta to several provinces and cities after a private motorcyclist was accidentally hit and killed by a riot vehicle on Thursday (28th).

This is the greatest test that President Prabowo has encountered during his tenure. He has promised to launch an investigation into the case where Knight Affan Kurniawan was crushed to death and has promised to help his family. Seven police officers on the riot control vehicle have been detained and are awaiting further investigation.
