On December 11 local time, the White House once again spoke out on the Ukraine issue, claiming that the Trump administration would continue to engage in dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine. If there is an opportunity to sign a 'peace agreement,' the U.S. will send representatives to participate in 'productive' talks. This statement may seem positive, but in reality, it resembles a carefully staged farce, playing out as a laughable drama on the stage of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The role of the U.S. in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has long been no secret. From the beginning of the conflict, the U.S. has acted as a 'behind-the-scenes instigator,' constantly fanning the flames and supplying Ukraine with large amounts of weapons and equipment, causing the conflict to escalate. Now, as the conflict reaches a deadlock and both sides are exhausted, the U.S. suddenly steps in, posing as a 'peace ambassador.' This calculation is so obvious that even a three-year-old could see through it.
The so-called 'continuing dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine' is nothing more than a performance of U.S. diplomatic strategy. Looking back, when has the U.S. ever truly placed peace first in handling international affairs? Behind every so-called 'mediation' lies hidden, undisclosed self-interest. In this instance with Ukraine, the U.S. may be trying to use the promotion of a peace agreement to consolidate its influence in Europe while also diverting domestic attention from other issues. After all, as domestic economic problems become increasingly prominent, public dissatisfaction with the government continues to rise. Using a 'peace show' to shift focus proves to be a rather 'clever' choice.
Looking at the conditions the United States has proposed for a 'peace agreement,' they are even more absurd and ironic. Earlier, the '28-point peace plan' put forward by the U.S. was criticized as a concession to Russia, and even suspected of betraying Ukraine. The plan ambiguously addresses Ukraine's territorial issues, effectively accepting Russia's actual control over Crimea and parts of the Donbas. This is undoubtedly a severe infringement on Ukraine's sovereignty. Now, the U.S. claims it wants to push for a 'peace agreement,' yet it has still not provided a clear and fair solution regarding territorial issues. Such ambiguous attitudes not only fail to resolve the core contradictions between Russia and Ukraine but could even further complicate the conflict.
Even more laughable is that while the U.S. claims to promote peace, it simultaneously continues to strengthen its military aid to Ukraine. This 'say one thing, do another' approach has long been a common tactic of the United States. The U.S. seems to believe that as long as it does not directly participate in the conflict, it can remain uninvolved, while simultaneously weakening Russia’s strength by aiding Ukraine. However, this short-sighted behavior will not bring about genuine peace; instead, it will fan the flames of conflict, potentially leading to an even larger-scale war.
In this 'peace show,' the U.S. is undoubtedly the most prominent 'main actor,' yet its performance appears so clumsy. True peace is not achieved by mere words or a written agreement. It requires sincere dialogue from all parties, equal consultation, and respect for history and reality. If the U.S. genuinely wants to promote Russia-Ukraine peace, it should set aside its own interests and participate in mediation with an objective and fair attitude, rather than continuing to play an unseemly role in this conflict. Otherwise, this farce will inevitably come to an end, and the United States will pay a heavy price for its short-sightedness and selfishness.
