Kim Gun-hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, exercised her right to remain silent for most of the interrogations. The first summons investigation against her ended early after lasting about four hours.
Xinhua News Agency, citing reports from South Korean media, said that the "Kim Gun-hee Special Investigation Team" said on Thursday (August 14) that they had launched an investigation on suspicion of Kim Gun-hee's interference in public office elections and other matters on that day.
Assistant Prosecutor Moon Hong-joo (transliteration) of the Special Prosecutor's Office said, "We questioned the suspect Kim Gun-hee regarding illegal interference in the election and nomination..." The suspect exercised the right to remain silent on most of the charges. The investigation ended early as Kim Gun-hee refused to make a statement.
The Special Investigation Team will summon Kim Gun-hee again next Monday (the 18th) for additional investigation.
It was reported that Kim Geon-hee left the Seoul Southern Detention Center at 8:40 a.m. local time on Thursday (7:40 a.m. Singapore time) and was escorted by a vehicle of the Ministry of Justice to the Special Investigation Unit office near Gwanghwamun in the center of Seoul. The investigation was conducted from 10 a.m. to 2:10 p.m., including a lunch break during this period.
Last week, the Kim Gun-hee Special Investigation Team requested the Seoul Central District Court of South Korea to approve the arrest of Kim Gun-hee on suspicion of violating the Capital Market Act, the Political Funds Act, and the Act on Aggravated Punishment for Specific Crimes. After pre-arrest questioning and a review of the necessity of arrest, the Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for Kim Geon-hee late Tuesday night (the 12th) on the grounds of "concern that the suspect might destroy evidence", and Kim Geon-hee was subsequently detained in the Seoul Southern Detention Center.
The prosecution accused Kim Gun-hee of providing financial support to the former chairman of Deutsche Automotive during the period from 2009 to 2012 when he instructed traders to manipulate stock prices. Kim Geon-hee is also suspected of interfering in public office elections and other activities.
