Large-scale demonstrations broke out in Nepal, protesting against the government's ban on social media and corruption. Riots broke out during the demonstration, resulting in 14 deaths and dozens of injuries.

According to foreign media reports, large-scale demonstrations broke out in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, on Monday (September 8th). Thousands of protesters opposed the government's ban on multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, on the grounds that the platforms had not completed registration.

Among the demonstrators were a large number of young people. During the protest, some demonstrators attempted to break through the police roadblocks and enter the parliament building, where they clashed with the police. The police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. According to Nepalese state media reports in the evening of the same day, the riots have caused 14 deaths.

Reuters witnesses said several protesters were injured and sent to nearby hospitals. Some protesters also intercepted a security vehicle heading for the parliament and burned an ambulance.

The Kathmandu district authority said that due to the protesters' start of violent behavior, a curfew has been imposed in the area around the parliament building until 10 p.m. local time (0:15 a.m. on the 9th, Singapore time) to control the situation.

It is reported that the curfew has been extended to the Sinhaduba area of Kathmandu. Important places such as the Prime Minister's office, major government departments, the Prime minister's official residence and the presidential palace are all located in this area.

Protests also broke out in other cities. The police said that there were similar demonstrations in Bilatnagar and Bharatpur in the southern plains, as well as Pokhara, a gateway city to Annapurna, the 10th highest peak in the world, in western Nepal.

The Nepalese government stated last week that social media users with false identities spread hate speech and fake news through certain platforms and carried out criminal activities such as fraud. Nepal has a population of approximately 30 million, with about 90% being Internet users. Opponents are dissatisfied with the government's ban on social media platforms.
