The Thai distributor of Chinese cellphone company Oppo acknowledged the data breach and said it filed a police report last month.
Thailand's Nation newspaper reported that Oppo's Thai distributor, Poseify Group Co Ltd, reported the incident to police on December 13, 2024; The company has also submitted a formal notice to the PDPC Eagle Eye, a personal data protection centre. The investigation is ongoing.
A screenshot of the dark web published by Hawkeye on Thursday (January 23) shows the content of the sale being data purportedly from Oppo Thailand. The leaked data reportedly amounted to 165 gigabytes, including key internal information such as customer and employee data and system databases. The seller, using the pseudonym "SSL_Dragon," asked for $20,000.
Oppo confirmed a data breach in Thailand, denying it was related to the lending app.
The company issued a statement assuring that it will fully cooperate with relevant authorities to speed up the investigation, verify the facts and closely monitor the development of the situation. If evidence confirms a data breach, the company will take legal action to the fullest extent possible and work closely with Hawkeye to resolve the issue and protect the data of the affected parties.
The company also clarified that this incident is completely unrelated to previous disputes involving loan applications.
Although Oppo Thailand has acknowledged the existence of a data breach, key details such as the scope of the breach and the number of users affected remain unclear. The People's Protection Committee and relevant departments are actively investigating the matter. At the same time, Oppo users are advised to stay up to date with the latest information, be alert for suspicious emails or messages, change their Oppo account passwords, and regularly monitor bank account activity.
