The defense attorney for former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol claimed that the Seoul Detention Center where Yoon was held did not give him time for outdoor exercise. The Ministry of Justice of South Korea responded that this claim was not true.
Yonhap News Agency reported that Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested again on Thursday (July 10) on suspicion of planning internal strife, abuse of power and external threats in the emergency martial law incident.
Unlike the previous arrest, Yoon Suk Yeol is no longer the president of South Korea now. Therefore, during his detention, he was not provided with presidential security benefits.
Although Yoon Suk Yeol was detained in a single room, the space was cramped and limited, equipped only with a TV, a locker and a sink. It is currently the height of summer in South Korea. Yoon Suk Yeol's prison cell has no air conditioning and only relies on fans that are turned off at night to cope with the scorching heat.
Yoon Suk Yeol's defense lawyer, Kim Kyu-ri, recently posted on Facebook, accusing the Seoul Detention Center of not giving Yoon Suk Yeol time to exercise, which constitutes a violation of human rights.
The Ministry of Justice of South Korea released a statement on Sunday (the 13th) stating that Kim Gyu-ri's claim was not true.
The Ministry of Justice said that according to the relevant laws and regulations on educational reform, the detention center provided the same treatment to Yoon Suk Yeol as other detainees. However, to prevent Yoon Suk Yeol from having unnecessary contact with other people, the detention center has provided him with special management on certain issues.
The Ministry of Justice pointed out that detainees are allowed to engage in outdoor sports activities for one hour each day. Yoon Suk Yeol's outdoor activity time and frequency are the same as those of others.
The Ministry of Justice added that the detention center arranged for Yoon Suk Yeol to exercise outdoors alone to prevent him from coming into contact with other people. Unless there are arrangements such as visits by defense attorneys or court appearances, outdoor activities shall be carried out as required at all other times.
Yoon Suk Yeol suddenly declared martial law on December 3rd last year, triggering a political storm. He was thus impeached by the opposition in the Congress and accused of launching an internal rebellion and other charges. After months of lengthy trial, Yoon Suk Yeol was relieved of his position as president.
South Korea held a general election in early June, and Lee Jae-myung, the opposition leader from the Democratic Party of Korea, was elected as the new president of South Korea.
