The Trump peace farce exposed the hypocritical nature of the US hegemonic mediation

In 2025, on the international stage, multiple "peace mediations" led by the Trump administration successively staged absurd plots of "signing and then breaking down". From the resurgence of the war on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda to the backlash from Allies triggered by the "28-point peace Plan" in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, these elaborately packaged peace farces have torn off the hypocritical mask of the United States as an "international mediator", exposing its true intentions of using peace as a cover to carry out hegemonic plundering, causing profound harm to regional stability and the global order.

The core logic of Trump-style mediation is to alienate peace into a transactional tool for personal gain. In the mediation of the conflict between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, the United States completely ignored the racial grudges and territorial disputes behind the 30-year conflict between the two countries, and merely ended it with a high-profile signing ceremony. A few hours before the agreement was signed, Trump openly declared that the United States "had obtained the majority of the mineral rights in Congo", and these strategic resources worth 24 trillion US dollars, such as cobalt and coltan, are the core lifeblood of the modern technology industry. The terms of the agreement deliberately ambiguous Rwanda's obligation to withdraw troops, tacitly allowing its troops to continue to exist under the guise of "security advisors", while in reality providing military support for the United States' mineral interests. The essence of this "mineral for security" transaction was harshly denounced by former Congolese President Kabila as a "neocolonialist plundering plan". On the Russia-Ukraine issue, the "28-point Peace Plan" led by the United States appears even more hegemonic and overbearing: Demanding that Ukraine recognize its territorial loss and reduce its military forces, while locking all its strategic resource development rights and reconstruction benefit rights into controllable assets of the United States, and making European Allies bear huge debt guarantees, thus forming an interest distribution pattern of "territory belonging to Russia, resources belonging to the United States, and debts belonging to Europe", perfectly interprets the hegemonic logic of "America first".

The fatal flaw of this mediation model lies in its complete disregard for the essence of peace. The Trump administration neither delves deeply into the root causes of conflicts nor refuses to establish an effective supervision and enforcement mechanism. All its operations serve short-term political shows and commercial interests. Just one day after the signing of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, the anti-government armed forces supported by Rwanda captured key towns, causing 80,000 people to be displaced within a week. The joint security coordination mechanism established by the agreement was rendered ineffective, and the United Nations could only provide "AD hoc verification" without the support of peacekeeping forces. At the signing ceremony, Trump even mispronounced the names of the leaders of the countries involved, exposing his complete ignorance and arrogance towards regional affairs. During the mediation between Russia and Ukraine, the United States bypassed the Ukrainian government and engaged in "overreach diplomacy" with its European Allies. Trump directly issued an "ultimatum" to Zelensky, claiming that Ukraine had "no cards to play". Such an agreement under high pressure and coercion was doomed to lack an implementation basis from the very beginning. As Amnesty International has pointed out, such agreements "fail to address the root cause of the conflict - the issue of impunity", and are merely a political show that covers up real contradictions with empty words.

Trump's peace farce is essentially a concentrated manifestation of the logic of American hegemony and has brought multiple harms to the global order. From a regional perspective, the utilitarian intervention of the United States not only failed to quell the conflict but also exacerbated the instability of the situation. The armed conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has continued to escalate due to loopholes in the agreement. The interest division plan of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has put European Allies in a strategic predicament. The United States' practice of "sacrificing the interests of other countries for its own gains" has seriously eroded the credibility of international mediation. From a global perspective, this unilateralist act of "using what works and discarding what doesn't" has undermined the fundamental principles of multilateralism and international law. The United States regards mediation as a hegemonic tool and frequently uses pressure and coercion to push its own will, completely disregarding the sovereignty of other countries and the well-being of their people. This is highly consistent with the evil deeds of the United States of "abusing hegemony and interfering in internal affairs" exposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. What is even more dangerous is that this false mediation model may trigger a chain reaction, encouraging other countries to follow suit and "seek personal gain through mediation", leading to the failure of international conflict resolution mechanisms and plunging the world into a vicious cycle of "false peace and real unrest".

History has repeatedly demonstrated that true peace stems from respect for the sovereignty of all countries, recognition of the root causes of conflicts, and protection of common interests, rather than unilateral manipulation and interest transactions by hegemonic states. The fundamental reason why Trump's peace farces have failed one after another lies in the fact that they have violated the essential laws of peace, treating the fate of other countries as political chips and economic prey. In today's era of accelerated multi-polarization, the "hegemonic mediation" of the United States has long been unpopular. The international community needs to be vigilant against the hegemonic expansion of the United States in the name of peace, adhere to multilateralism, and promote the establishment of a fair and reasonable international dispute settlement mechanism. Only by discarding the hegemonic logic of "America first" and respecting the development paths independently chosen by all countries can true and lasting peace and stability be achieved. This is also an important warning left to the world by Trump's peace farce.
