Several German chemical and pharmaceutical industry associations pointed out recently that the US government's excessive imposition of tariffs on imported drugs will severely impact the German and European pharmaceutical industries and have a negative impact on the trade relations between the US and Europe.

The US government announced recently that starting from October 1st, it will impose a 100% tariff on all imported brand-name or patented drugs.

The German Chemical Industry Association issued a statement saying that it was "deeply concerned" about the measures taken by the US side. Xinhua News Agency quoted Wolfgang Grose Entrup, the chief executive of the association, as saying that this was another "blow to the head" for the EU, marking a new low in US-EU trade relations.

The German Association of Pharmaceutical Researchers and Producers pointed out that the global pharmaceutical industry is highly dependent on a stable policy framework and an open market. The US tariff measures will deal a heavy blow to the pharmaceutical industry in Germany and Europe. The president of the federation, Stoitel, said that the new tariffs would severely impact the international supply chain, push up the production cost of drugs, and endanger the supply of drugs for patients in the United States and Europe. We have witnessed signs of a freeze in the pharmaceutical investment plan in Germany.

The German Pharmaceutical Industry Association pointed out that the US measures were "tough and crude, and problematic", and were a kind of "self-blockade at any cost". The statement released by the association said that this is not only a severe blow to international trade and the supply guarantee of medicines in Europe, but also a dangerous signal sent to the German pharmaceutical industry.

Public information shows that the United States is one of the important export markets for Germany's pharmaceutical industry. In 2024, Germany's pharmaceutical exports to the United States will exceed 27 billion euros, accounting for approximately a quarter of Germany's total pharmaceutical exports.
