U.S. President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and pardoned 39 as he approaches the end of his term. The White House said it was the largest single-day act of forgiveness in U.S. history.
Biden on Thursday commuted the sentences of about 1,500 people and pardoned 39 non-violent offenders, saying they had turned their lives around and were committed to making their communities stronger and safer.
Biden said, "America was built on possibility and the promise of change. As President, I have the privilege of extending forgiveness to those who have shown repentance."
It was the largest clemency commutation in U.S. history in a single day. The White House said nearly 1,500 of those who received commutations had already served at least a year in home detention.
"These commuted inmates, who were placed under house arrest during the coronavirus pandemic, have successfully reintegrated into their families and communities and demonstrated that they deserve a second chance," Biden said.
Biden drew criticism earlier this month for pardoning his son Hunter, who was facing jail time on gun and tax charges.
Among those granted clemency Thursday, the White House said, was a decorated veteran pilot who often helped fellow churchgoers; There's also a nurse who has led emergency response to multiple natural disasters, and an addiction counselor who volunteers his time.
"These initiatives will build on the President's record of criminal justice reform that will help reunite families, build communities and reintegrate individuals into society."
