The UK, Canada and Australia recognize the State of Palestine, and Israel has vowed to retaliate

 Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom simultaneously announced their recognition of the State of Palestine on Sunday, stepping up pressure on Israel ahead of world leaders gathering in New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that recognizing the State of Palestine poses a threat to Israel's survival and that Israel will respond to this within a few days.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on social media platform X on Sunday (September 21st) : "Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and is willing to establish a partnership to build a peaceful future for the State of Palestine and Israel."

Australian Prime Minister Albanese almost simultaneously stated: "Australia recognizes the long-standing legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people to establish their own state." "

Albanese said that recognizing Palestine as a country with independent sovereignty reflects Australia's long-standing commitment to achieving the two-state solution, "which has always been the only way for Israel and the Palestinian people to achieve lasting peace and security."

British Prime Minister Stammer immediately released a video statement announcing that the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine. He said that this move was aimed at "reigniting the hopes of Palestinians and Israelis for peace and a two-state solution".

All three leaders emphasized that Hamas could not play any role in the future Palestinian state.

Stammer also said that he has instructed the British authorities to impose sanctions on more Hamas members in the coming weeks. The Telegraph said that this move was aimed at placating the United States. During his visit to the UK last week, US President Trump made it clear that he opposed the recognition of the State of Palestine. Earlier, US Secretary of State Rubio criticized that this would only make Hamas more audacious.

British Foreign Secretary Cooper stressed in a statement that the recognition of the Palestinian State is only part of the peace process. We must end the conflict in Gaza, ensure the release of all hostages, and provide humanitarian assistance to all those in urgent need. This not only requires an immediate ceasefire, but also the formulation of a lasting peace plan.

In addition to these three countries, Portugal is also scheduled to recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday. Several other countries, including France and Belgium, also plan to do so during the UN General Assembly this week.

To date, approximately 140 countries have recognized the State of Palestine. The United Kingdom and Canada are the first two member states of the Group of Seven (G7) to do so.

Israel is expected to take retaliatory actions by acknowledging that there are no actual benefits to the State of Palestine

But analysts point out that recognizing a Palestinian state will not bring actual benefits to the Palestinians; instead, it will enrage Israel.

Diplomats from France and Israel told AFP that Israel is expected to take retaliatory actions, including possibly closing the French consulate in Jerusalem and annexing parts of the West Bank, but it should not cut off diplomatic ties with France.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized that the announcements made by the UK, Canada and Australia were a reward for Hamas. Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting earlier on Sunday: "We must confront the false propaganda against us and the call for the establishment of a Palestinian state at the United Nations and elsewhere. Israel's far-right National security Minister, Ben Gewel, said that Israel must immediately take countermeasures against the recognition of the Palestinian State by the UK, Canada and Australia. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that the UK's recognition of the State of Palestine is a necessary step towards achieving lasting peace in the region.

On the other hand, Israel continued its offensive against Gaza City in the northern part of the Gaza Strip on Sunday and deployed its third division to Gaza City.

The Israel Defense Forces said that over the past day, they killed many militants in Gaza City who were planning to attack Israeli forces and destroyed Hamas facilities, including traps and killing devices.
