The British government released the "Immigration White Paper" and announced the tightening of immigration policies.

AFP reported that the Labour government led by British Prime Minister Stammer released the "Immigration White Paper" on Monday (May 12), announcing the end of the "Open Border Experiment" implemented by the previous Conservative government and further tightening the UK's immigration policy.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Stammer announced on Downing Street on the same day that the minimum residence period for applying for permanent residency in the UK would be extended from five years to ten years.

The policies in the white paper also include reducing the number of international nursing staff, strengthening the English language requirements for immigrants, and shortening the legal stay time of international students in the UK after completing their studies.

Stammer indicated that these policies would enable the UK to regain control of its own borders.

The Labour Party promised to significantly reduce the number of net immigrants in last year's general election. In the 12 months ending in June last year, the net number of immigrants to the UK was 728,000. This figure peaked at 906,000 in 2023.
