Hamas: It will actively respond to the request to provide food and medicine to the hostages

A spokesperson for the Qassan Brigade, an armed wing under Hamas, issued a statement on Sunday (August 3) saying that the Qassan Brigade is ready to respond positively to any requests from the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the provision of food and medicine to Israeli hostages.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and Reuters, the spokesperson of the Qassan Brigade, Ubeda, said that the Qassan Brigade would not deliberately starve the hostages, and the food rations they received were comparable to those of Hamas militants and civilians in Gaza. "While the people of Gaza are suffering from hunger and siege, they will not receive special treatment." "

The statement said that the Qassan Brigade demanded that Israel must cease "all air operations" during the period when the International Committee of the Red Cross was delivering food and medicine to the hostages. The Qassan Brigade also demands that Israel "continuously open humanitarian corridors" for all Gaza residents in the Gaza Strip to ensure that the delivery of food and medicine is not interrupted.

Hamas released three videos on July 31 and August 1, showing the images of the two hostages captured on October 7, 2023. They are Rom Braslavski, a 21-year-old with dual German and Israeli nationality, and Evyatar David, a 24-year-old. The two were detained in a narrow concrete tunnel in Gaza, looking very weak and severely malnourished. The video was released and quickly sparked outrage in Israel and the international community.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on August 3 asked the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide food and medical treatment to Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip. In response, the International Committee of the Red Cross reaffirmed its hope for access to the hostages to assess their physical condition and provide medical support.

Some media have pointed out that the hostage video released by Hamas to some extent indicates that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is extremely serious. Multiple UN agencies warned at the end of July that the Gaza Strip is facing a comprehensive risk of famine.

Israeli officials said that there are still 50 hostages in the Gaza Strip at present, among whom it is believed that only 20 have survived. So far, Hamas has prohibited any humanitarian organization from contacting hostages in any form.

According to Egypt's official TV station Al Qahera News TV, two trucks carrying 107 tons of diesel are about to enter the Gaza Strip. For several months, Israel strictly restricted the entry of aid supplies into the Gaza Strip and only relaxed it when famine began to spread.

The Office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territory (COGAT) of Israel, which is responsible for coordinating aid, said that four UN oil tankers have entered the Gaza Strip to assist in the operation of hospitals, bakeries, public kitchens and other basic services.

It is still unclear whether the two diesel trucks have entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt.
