Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu held a press conference on Sunday (August 10) ahead of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to defend his plan to "control" Gaza City.
Netanyahu said that the Gaza City plan is "the best way to end the war and end it quickly."
He said that Hamas still has thousands of armed terrorists in the Gaza Strip whose aim is to destroy Israel, and added that Gazans "plead with us and the world" to help them get rid of Hamas.
Israel's Security Cabinet approved a plan on Friday (the 8th), authorizing the military to take over Gaza City. Netanyahu defended on Sunday that the new operation would be implemented in a relatively short period of time, "because we want to end the war."
He also emphasized that Israel's goal is not to occupy Gaza but to liberate it. If Hamas releases the hostages and agrees to lay down its arms, the war will come to an end.
This plan has drawn strong criticism from many countries around the world. Netanyahu hit back at the press conference, saying that Israel is prepared to continue fighting without the support of other countries. Whether or not we have the support of others, we will win this war.
Netanyahu pointed out that the goal of the new Israeli operation is to destroy the remaining two Hamas strongholds and the central camp in Gaza City, while establishing safe corridors and security zones to allow civilians to leave the area.
Israel has no choice but to fulfill its mission and completely defeat Hamas. Now we have made great progress. Approximately 70% to 75% of Gaza is under Israeli control, that is, under military control.
But there are still two strongholds missing, the central camp in Gaza City and Mawasi.
