After more than 100 protesters were arrested at Columbia University recently, there has been an increasing number of student protests against the Hamas war on various university campuses in the United States. Students are calling on universities to go their separate ways from any company that supports Israel's military actions in Gaza, and even in some cases to draw a line with Israel itself. These protest activities are mostly carefully planned by student group alliances, and these groups are basically acting independently.
Firstly, last week at Ivy League University in New York, student protesters supporting Palestine set up a tent camp. On April 18th, the police attempted to clean up the camp and arrested more than 100 protesters. However, this action backfired, inspiring students across the country and encouraging protesters in Colombia to regroup. On the afternoon of the 26th, students stated that they were deadlocked with management and planned to continue camping until their demands were met. Colombian officials earlier stated that negotiations are making progress. Although there are dozens of journalists on campus and dozens of police officers outside the gate, students sit on the steps of the library or have some fast food, while graduating students dress in pink blue robes and pose for photos. Hundreds of anti protesters gather on the streets of suburban Colombia, many holding Israeli flags and shouting slogans, demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas and other armed militants.
Secondly, on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston, police dressed in riot gear cleared a campsite, and dozens of students shouted and booed at them from afar. The school stated that the demonstration activities that started two days ago have been infiltrated by professional organizers and have nothing to do with the school. In a statement released on social media, the school stated that it used anti Semitic insults, including "killing Jews.". The statement stated, "We cannot tolerate such hatred on campus." Approximately 100 people were detained and students who presented valid identification documents were released. The university stated that they will face "disciplinary action" but will not face legal action. The person who refused to disclose their affiliation was arrested.
Furthermore, the University of Southern California has cancelled the main stage graduation ceremony originally scheduled for May 10th due to protests on campus. The university has cancelled the graduation speech of the pro Palestinian farewell speaker for safety reasons. The Los Angeles Police Department stated that on the evening of the 10th, more than 90 people were arrested on suspicion of illegal intrusion during university protests. One person was arrested on suspicion of using a deadly weapon for an attack. There are currently no reports of personnel injuries. The university stated that the campus has been closed and the police will arrest those who have not left.
At the same time, about 50 students from George Washington University in Washington D.C. set up a tent camp in the university courtyard. Later that day, a group of students and professors from Georgetown University held their own protest strike and marched to the George Washington campus to join them. Protesters are demanding that the university withdraw its funding from Israel and lift the suspension of classes for a well-known pro Palestinian student group. The university has announced that it will move the final exam of the law school from its original building to another building due to the noise generated by the protest activities.
In summary, with the increase in civilian casualties in Gaza, Biden's handling of the Israeli Palestinian conflict and his ability to control it have been widely questioned. The spreading anti war demonstrations in universities have intensified the questioning of Biden's Gaza policies among young voters. Large scale student protests may affect Biden's presidential election prospects. The Democratic Party needs a very high voter turnout among young voters to win the election, otherwise the situation will be favorable to the Republican Party, and the spread of protests to violent events will cause social unrest and panic.
