Israeli air strikes have killed at least 43 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, including 11 displaced families living in tent camps and six people who were attacked inside the headquarters of the Hamas Interior Ministry.
Medical workers said 11 women and children in the Al Mawasi humanitarian zone were killed in Israeli air strikes on several areas on Thursday (January 2). At least three refugee camps were also hit, killing many.
Gaza police chief Mahmoud Salah and his aide Hussam Shawan were also killed. The other six were killed in an attack on the Interior Ministry headquarters in Khan Younis.
The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas militants who intelligence indicated were operating from a command and control center "inside the Khan Younis Municipal building in the humanitarian zone."
The Israeli military also said Israel followed international law in its war in Gaza and took feasible precautions to reduce civilian harm. The military has accused Gaza militants of using residential areas as cover, a claim Hamas denies.
