South Korean President Lee Jae-myeong, who is currently visiting the United States, inspected the shipyard of Hanwha Group in Philadelphia on Tuesday (August 26) and attended the naming ceremony of the US National Security multi-mission vessel (NSMV) "Maine".
Yonhap News Agency reported that Lee Jae-myeong said at the naming ceremony that South Korea's shipbuilding industry will contribute to strengthening the maritime security of the United States and revitalizing the US shipbuilding industry. As the president of an ally of the United States, he was very pleased about this. And it is believed that the Korea-US Shipbuilding cooperation project "MASGA" (short for Make American Shipbuilding Great Again, meaning to make the American shipbuilding industry great again) can bring win-win results for the common development of the shipbuilding industries of South Korea and the United States.
Lee Jae-myeong also said that the 72-year-old South Korea-US alliance will open a new chapter of a "future-oriented comprehensive strategic alliance" through the Philadelphia Shipyard, and its coverage will expand to the fields of security, economy and technology.
Analysis suggests that Lee held a summit meeting with US President Trump on the 25th and visited the Philadelphia Shipyard the next day, fully demonstrating the will to deepen shipbuilding cooperation between South Korea and the United States.
Hanwha acquired the Philadelphia Shipyard in December last year, becoming the first South Korean company to purchase a local US shipyard. Hanwha has received an order from the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to build five national security multi-mission vessels, each worth 300 million U.S. dollars. The "Maine", which was named on Tuesday, is one of them.
On August 29, 2025, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled by a 7-4 vote that most of the global tariff policies implemented by the Trump administration were illegal, determining that they exceeded the president's legal authority.
