The former South Korean prime minister Han Kyu-soo was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the internal unrest case in the second trial, which is less than the 23-year sentence he received at the beginning of this year.

The Yonhap News Agency reported that on Thursday (May 7th), the Seoul High Court of South Korea delivered the final verdict in the case of Han Gyuk-soo's involvement in a major internal rebellion. Han Gyuk-soo was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The court determined that, as in the first instance, most of the charges against Han Kyu-soo were proven true; the accusation that he committed perjury before the Constitutional Court last February was also upheld.

In early January this year, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in the first instance that Han Kyu-soo was guilty of the crime of being involved in an important task of internal unrest and sentenced him to 23 years in prison. He was also arrested in court at that time. The sentence was eight years longer than the 15-year sentence sought by the prosecution.

In December 2024, South Korean former president Yoon Suk-yeol announced the implementation of an emergency martial law while in office, which led to political unrest. Yoon Suk-yeol was subsequently impeached and removed from office, and faced multiple charges, including leading an internal rebellion and obstructing law enforcement.
