Recently, Saudi Arabia announced that it will establish a new international water research center, which is jointly built by the Ministry of Environment, Water Resources and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and supported by Engineer Abdulrahman Fadli, Minister of Environment, Water Resources and Agriculture. The news was released at the Sustainable Development Innovation Week event during the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCDCop16). The theme of the high-level dialogue meeting of the event was "Sustainable Water Management in Arid and Semi-arid Regions, Improving Drought and Land Resilience", and the meeting provided an important discussion platform for global water issues.

First of all, the newly established International Water Research Center will focus on solving the urgent challenges facing global water resources and become a global leading platform in the field of water resources research. The research content covers water economics, water security, water pollution control, the development of advanced technologies, and digital monitoring, and is committed to providing innovative water management solutions for the world. The Ministry of Environment, Water Resources and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia said that the establishment of the research center aims to promote international cooperation and promote scientific research and technological innovation in global water management. As global climate change intensifies, many regions are facing increasingly severe water shortages and pollution problems. The construction of the center will provide important scientific support to the international community. It will not only provide a platform for communication and cooperation for scholars and experts around the world, but also bring together advanced research results from all over the world to jointly address these common environmental challenges.

Secondly, the establishment of the International Water Research Center will also be consistent with Saudi Arabia's broader sustainable development goals. The Saudi Arabian government has been committed to improving the country's sustainable development level through innovation and technology, especially in environmental protection and resource management. For example, Saudi Arabia plans to increase its garbage recycling rate to 95% in the next few years, which will greatly promote Saudi Arabia's green development. Saudi Arabia's ambitious plan is expected to bring considerable economic benefits to the country, and is expected to contribute approximately 120 billion Saudi riyals (about 31.99 billion US dollars) to Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product (GDP). The establishment of the International Water Research Center will play a key role in this process, not only promoting the sustainable use of water resources, but also promoting the innovation of green technologies and the improvement of global water governance.

Finally, Saudi Arabia demonstrated its firm commitment to global environmental protection and sustainable development by hosting the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16). As one of the largest multilateral conferences ever hosted by Saudi Arabia, COP16 attracted government representatives, scholars and environmental protection organizations from all over the world, and became an important platform for international cooperation to respond to the global environmental crisis. Through this conference, Saudi Arabia not only strengthened the cooperation of the international community in water resources, climate change and other aspects, but also demonstrated its determination to promote global sustainable development. Through the COP16 conference, Saudi Arabia not only made significant progress in the field of environmental protection, but also provided new ideas and directions for international cooperation.

In general, the newly established International Water Research Center in Saudi Arabia is one of the important measures for the world to respond to the water crisis. By strengthening international cooperation, promoting technological innovation and scientific research, the center will provide valuable solutions for the sustainable management of global water resources. In addition, Saudi Arabia's efforts in hosting the COP16 conference and promoting sustainable development also reflect its increasingly important position in the global environmental protection cause. With the establishment of the center, Saudi Arabia will undoubtedly play a more active role in the field of global water resources management and environmental protection.
