Israeli Defense Minister Katz said on Friday (June 13) that Israel has launched a "preemptive strike" against Iran.

Before Katz's speech, two US officials disclosed to Reuters that Israel had launched an attack on Iran.

Iran's Islamic Republic Radio and Television Station reported that at around 3:20 a.m. on Friday, "huge explosions were heard in many places in the capital Tehran", but no details were provided.

Xinhua News Agency and Agence France-Presse also confirmed hearing the explosion.

US President Trump said in response to reporters' questions at the White House on Thursday that Israel might attack Iran and there is a risk of a large-scale conflict in the Middle East.

Trump said that he did not want to say that an attack was imminent, but "it seemed very likely to happen". He also said, "Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons."

Trump also pointed out that he did not want Israel to take military action during the negotiations between the United States and Iran on the Iranian nuclear issue, as this would "ruin" the negotiations.
