After a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, US President Donald Trump announced that the deadline for imposing a 50% tariff on the European Union would be extended to July 9.

Bloomberg reported that Trump told reporters on his way back to Washington on Sunday (May 25th), "We had a very pleasant phone call and I agreed to extend the deadline."

According to Agence France-Presse, von der Leyen also posted on social media on Sunday that she had "a good call" with Trump and promised that the EU would quickly push for a trade deal with Washington.

She wrote: "The European Union and the United States have the most important and closest trade relationship in the world..." In order to reach a good agreement, we need time until July 9th.

The EU was originally facing a 20% reciprocal tariff, but Trump announced in April that the imposition of reciprocal tariffs would be suspended until July 9, giving the EU time to negotiate with the United States.

However, Trump suddenly stepped up pressure last Friday (the 23rd), criticizing the negotiations with the EU as "making no progress" and reiterating that the EU was "taking advantage" of the US, threatening to impose a 50% tariff on all EU products exported to the US starting from June 1st.
