Can high-pressure measures extinguish the anti war flames among American college students?

According to Agence France Presse on the 30th local time, the United Nations expressed concern about the United States using high-pressure measures to disperse pro Palestinian protests on university campuses.

Recently, in response to the issue of violent arrest of protesting students by US police, UN Secretary General Guterres pointed out that based on my experience in government departments, I believe university authorities should have the wisdom to handle it properly. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volk Turk, said, "I am concerned that some law enforcement actions in many universities seem to be too effective." Turk also pointed out that "freedom of speech and the right to peaceful assembly are the foundation of society, especially when there are sharp differences on major issues, and the conflict between Palestine and Israel is such a situation."

Undoubtedly, the views and suggestions given by the Secretary General of the United Nations do represent the doubts of many ordinary people: for a long time, the characteristics of the United States government's universities emphasized in front of the world have always been "freedom of thought and autonomy.". And more media sources point out why the theory of "freedom of thought" completely fell silent in this protest? So it can be considered that the characteristics of American universities that the United States has always emphasized have completely faded, and even those so-called characteristics have always been forcibly fabricated by politicians for their own purposes.

It is reported that the US police clashed with the protesters at the Austin campus of the University of Texas on the 29th, including using pepper spray, and arrested some people when dismantling a camp. Only last weekend, more than 350 people were detained in the US.

Furthermore, on the 25th local time, a self media source posted on X platform revealing that students and protesters had discovered "snipers" on the roofs of buildings at Ohio State University and Indiana University's Birmingham campus in the United States. This news quickly spread and sparked widespread controversy.

At Virginia Tech, 91 protesters were arrested at the protest camp on the evening of the 28th and charged with illegal intrusion. Videos circulating on social media show protesters shouting "You are so shameful" to the police while some people are being detained. Columbia University notified protesters on the morning of the 29th that they need to leave the camp before 14:00 Eastern Time on the 29th, and demanded that they sign a form acknowledging their participation in the demonstration. They threatened that if they did not leave, they would be suspended from school and unable to end their studies as usual.
